Xiaomi has now unveiled the much-awaited and speculated MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat, the latest iteration of its custom Android skin MIUI for smartphones and tablets. It was announced alongside the Mi 5X smartphone which will run the latest MIUI version out of the box. As you would expect, MIUI 9 brings a bunch of new features and improvements over the predecessor MIUI 8 and here is everything that you should know.

The main focus during the MIUI 9 announcement was around the speed which is to make it faster for users to find anything they are looking for at that particular moment. To make this possible, Xiaomi is not only claiming “explosively fast app launch-times” with system optimization and dynamic resource allocation but also with the help of three key features: Image search, Smart Assistant, and Smart app launcher.

Xiaomi MIUI 9 Image Search:

As the name suggests, Image search lets you look for photos by simply typing in related keywords on MIUI 9. You can use this feature to find images based on location, people, events, expressions, screenshots, and documents. It is like what Google Photos offers but the actual usability of the feature will depend on how accurately and faster it can identify photos once the query has been made.

Xiaomi MIUI 9 Smart Assistant:

The Smart Assistant on MIUI 9 is like the universal search for your phone. It will allow you to look for almost anything on your phone by simply entering relevant keywords. It will be accessible by simply swiping right from the home screen and will give you a search box to enter the query along with app suggestions, news, and other useful information.

Xiaomi MIUI 9 Smart App Launcher:

The Smart app launcher on MIUI 9 will suggest apps on the basis of the content on the display. It is aimed at saving the time of exiting the main app and then looking for the desired app and then launch it manually. With contextual app suggestions, users will be able to jump to that app with just one tap and without even having to go to the home screen and app drawer.

Other than these features, Xiaomi has also added three new themes named No Boundary, Cool Black, and Colour Fantasy. The team has also worked to make design tweaks to the lock screen and home screen editing. As MIUI 9 is based on Android Nougat, you will surely get usual set of features like split screen mode and new notification management system.

The most important thing to keep in mind here is that Xiaomi actually has two versions of its MIUI ROM, one is the China ROM and another is Global ROM. This holds true for MIUI 9 as well which means some of the features will be exclusive to MIUI 9 China ROM and the Global ROM can be different from what was announced.

Xiaomi MIUI 9 Availability:

Xiaomi has said that MIUI 9 China Developer ROM will be released to eligible devices in three phases. The first phase will start on August 11th where the Mi 6, Mi 5X, and Redmi Note 4X (Qualcomm) will be recipients.

The second phase will see Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max 32G, Mi Max 64G/128G, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and Redmi 4X receiving the latest version which will start on August 25th. As for all the remaining Xiaomi devices, they will be receiving the update in late September but these devices will not include the Mi 1, Mi 1S, and Mi 2A.

There are no words on the availability of the MIUI 9 Global ROM yet but we will keep you updated as Xiaomi will share any further information.
