It looks like we are quite close to seeing the first smartphone with an on-screen fingerprint scanner and as speculated before, the Chinese brand Vivo seems to be the frontrunner. As per the latest leak coming from Weibo, Vivo is working on two flagship smartphones codenamed X20 and X20 Plus which are said to be the Xplay 7 and Xplay 7 Plus respectively.
The new leak shows that the Vivo Xplay 7 will be featuring on-screen fingerprint scanner along with a set of three cameras on the back. Starting the security part, the on-screen fingerprint scanner is a new technology which was demoed by Vivo earlier this year at MWC, Shanghai. It basically allows users to unlock their phone or any locked app by using their fingerprint on a specific part of the display. It basically means there will not be a visible fingerprint scanning area like we see in current smartphones in the form of a button or a circular ring. If the leak is legit, it will be the first smartphone to feature an on-screen fingerprint scanner.
As for the triple camera system, the Vivo Xplay 7 simply has three cameras on the back. It is an improvement over dual camera setups on many modern phones but what exactly are those improvements other than the extra lens, it remains to be seen. The leak does not reveal any other technical information about the upcoming phone but if you will look at the image, you will notice that it seems to be sporting a dual curved display with almost no side bezels.
We will be sharing more information as we will get to know more Vivo’s next flagships which seem to be ready to bring significant upgrades over their competitors.
