Both OnePlus 3 and 3T have proved to be one of the best smartphones from the Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus. These phones managed to impress both fans and critics alike with their performance, software experience, and most importantly the pricing. But like every other smartphone, they are also about to reach the end of the software support cycle. OnePlus has now confirmed that both OnePlus 3 and 3T will not be receiving any further major Android release after Android O.
The confirmation was made by OnePlus’ Head of Product Oliver Z in an interview published on company’s official forums. In the interview, he said:
“Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates.”
It means while OnePlus 3/3T owners will continue to receive security patches for near future, they will not be receiving an update to Android O successor next year. But this is certainly not a surprising news considering that both these smartphones will be receiving their second major Android update once Google releases Android O. This is the usual update cycle for many smartphones including Google’s own Pixel lineup.
Oliver Z further mentioned that once the update will be rolled out, the team will remove the OnePlus 3 and 3T from the Open Beta Program. The whole focus will be shifted towards only the OnePlus 5 which is the latest flagship from the company.
It is worth mentioning that this confirmation only means that there will not be any official update release from OnePlus. If you own any of these two devices and would like to run future major Android versions, you can always look out for custom ROMs from third-party developers.
