Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is reportedly planning to launch ‘BeingSmart’ brand of Android smartphones. The report is coming from the Economic Times citing two top industry experts as the source. These smartphones are said to mid-rangers with pricing expected to be below Rs. 20,000 for initial models.
The trademark for the ‘BeingSmart’ brand has already been registered and Salman Khan is also said to have selected a Chinese manufacturing plant and models for the same. If the brand indeed makes it to the market, it will be Khan’s second venture after the Being Human clothing brand. And like Being Human, he will be donating proceedings from the profit to charity and social works done by the Being Human Foundation.
Khan is currently reported to be building an operational team for his smartphones which is expected to be lead by professionals who have worked with Samsung and Micromax. But it unclear whether he will take a major shareholding in the company directly or through his family.
As for selling ‘BeingSmart’ smartphones, these will initially be available only via online stores but will eventually be sold via some of the major retail chains and may also be through Being Human outlets. The report also specifies that the brand will be positioned against Chinese brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time that Salman Khan is eying the smartphone market. He was interested in doing so about two years ago but in partnership with existing Indian brands. However, the deal did not come to fruition because of high loyalty charges demanded by the superstar.
One of the sources told ET, “But this time, Salman is himself driving the show and searching for an investor. He expects to launch the devices in the next two quarters and definitely before the festive season.”
