In this tutorial, we will be talking about how you can unlock bootloader of the Moto X Play smartphone. There are various benefits of having an unlocked bootloader on your device as it allows you to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM which further allows you to flash custom ROMs on the device.

But as it is clear by now that unlocking the bootloader is the first step towards all those things that you will be able to do on your Moto X Play. So without any further ado, let’s get started.

NOTE: Unlocking the bootloader will void your phone’s warranty and will also factory reset the data. So proceed only if you are okay with these two situations and it’s also advised to backup your data.

Steps to unlock bootloader of Moto X Play:

Step 1: Go to Moto X Play’s About Phone section under Settings and tap on the build number option seven times. This will enable Developer Options within phone’s settings from where you have to enable two options: USB debugging and OEM unlocking.

Step 2: Make sure you have either Android SDK or fastboot tool installed on your PC. Also, install the latest Motorola USB driver on the PC.

Step 3: Switch off your Moto X Play and press the power button along with volume down key for some time. This will make the device boot into fastboot mode and now, connect it to the PC using a USB cable.

Step 4: Open the command window (CMD) in the same folder where you have fastboot tool/Android SDK installed on your PC. Now, type the command fastboot devices to check if your device is showing as connected.

Step 5: Once it’s confirmed that the device is connected, type fastboot oem get_unlock_data command. This will show you multiple strings of random numbers similar to the one shown below:

(bootloader) 0A40040192024205#4C4D3556313230
(bootloader) 30373731363031303332323239#BD00
(bootloader) 8A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F95
(bootloader) 1A3E5#1F53280002000000000000000
(bootloader) 0000000

Step 6: Copy this to the notepad and remove all whitespaces and (bootloader) texts to convert it into a single string like:

0A40040192024205#4C4D355631323030373731363031303332323239#BD008A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F951A3E5#1F532800020000000000000000000000

Step 7: Now copy this single string and paste it in the box given on official Motorola bootloader unlock website. And click the button Can my device be unlocked? to check if your device is eligible. If yes, you will see a new button Request Unlock Key which you need to click to receive the unlock key on your email address linked with Motorola account.

Step 8: Once you have received the unlock key, type the command fastboot oem unlock YOUR UNIQUE KEY. If you have entered a valid unique key, you will see the message in the command window mentioning that your device’s bootloader has been unlocked successfully. It should also reboot your device automatically but if it does not, you don’t have to worry. Simply, reboot it manually where you will be welcomed by a warning message from Motorola mentioning that your device’s bootloader is unlocked.
