In this our latest tutorial, we will talk about how you can install TWRP recovery on Moto X Play. This will replace the stock recovery that comes installed on Motorola’s device and will give you options of doing a lot of things like rooting the device, flashing a custom ROM, taking the complete Nandroid backup of the device, and a lot of other tweaks.

But before you can continue with this tutorial, you will need to make sure that your Moto X Play’s bootloader is unlocked. If it is not, follow the previous link to get to the tutorial of bootloader unlocking. And you should keep in mind that this will void the warranty of your device so stop here if you are not okay with that.

TWRP has not released an official recovery for the Moto X Play yet but we have an unofficial build developed by XDA developer. It works good with the device and you have nothing to worry about. So simply take a backup of your phone’s data and proceed with the steps mentioned below.

Steps to install TWRP recovery on Moto X Play:

Step 1: Go to Moto X Play’s About Phone section under Settings and tap on the build number option seven times. This will enable Developer Options within phone’s settings from where you have to enable two options: USB debugging and OEM unlocking.

Step 2: Make sure you have either Android SDK or fastboot tool installed on your PC. Also, install the latest Motorola USB driver on the PC.

Step 3: Download the latest TWRP version and rename it to anything simple like recovery.img or anything else you like (.img is the extension for the file). Place the file at the same location where you have your fastboot tool/Android SDK installed.

Step 4: Switch off your Moto X Play and press the power button along with volume down key for some time. This will make the device boot into fastboot mode and now, connect it to the PC using a USB cable.

Step 5: Open the command window (CMD) in the same folder where you have fastboot tool/Android SDK installed on your PC. Now, type the command fastboot devices to check if your device is showing as connected.

Step 6: Now, type the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and this will start the installation process. Do make sure that you enter the same recovery name which you selected in step 3 above.

Once the TWRP recovery is installed successfully, you will get a confirmation message in the command window. You can now choose to either reboot the device or boot into TWRP recovery.
