Motorola is one of the best OEMs when it comes to faster software update roll out but for some reason, it has not been able to live up to the expectation this time. It has updated only Moto Z and Moto G4/G4 Plus to Nougat in a few regions and has delayed the update until May for Moto X series. So if you own a Moto X Play and can’t wait for the Nougat OTA to arrive, here’s how you can install official LineageOS on Moto X Play which is based on Android Nougat 7.1.1.

LineageOS is basically a resurrected version of the now dead CyanogenMod and is developed by the same people behind CM. And in order to have it on your Moto X Play, you will need to have the bootloader unlocked and TWRP recovery installed. You don’t need to have the Moto X Play rooted for installing LineageOS.

Before you proceed, make sure that:

  • You have taken the complete backup of your data.
  • Your phone’s battery is more than 60%. If it’s not, charge the phone first.
  • Follow all steps as mentioned below. We are not responsible if anything wrong happens with your device. And this will void your phone’s warranty, so you better back out if you don’t know what you are getting into.

Steps to install official LineageOS on Moto X Play:

Step 1: Download the latest LineageOS nightly for Moto X Play and GApps package of your choice. If you want root access after the ROM installation, go to LineageOS Extras page and download su (arm) zip file. Place all of these three files in the SD card of your device.

Note: The third su (arm) file is needed only if you want your phone to be rooted after installing LineageOS. If you don’t want, you can skip the file.

Step 2: Turn off Moto X Play and boot into TWRP recovery mode. Visit Wipe->Advanced Wipe and wipe Dalvik cache, system, data, and cache.

Step 3: Go back to TWRP home and select Install option. Navigate to the location where you placed the LineageOS file and select to start the flashing process. It will take some time but once the file is flashed, follow the same for flashing GApps package followed by su (arm) file.

Step 4: Reboot the device which will take more time than usual. This is only for the first boot so have patience. Once the phone boots up, you can start using the LineageOS 14.1 based on Nougat 7.1.1 and all future boots will be faster.
