India has now become the second largest smartphone market in the world. It has been confirmed by Counterpoint Research, a market research firm, in a report which mentions that India has a smartphone userbase of 220 million which helped it surpass the USA to claim the second spot. In the Q4 2015, India saw an annual growth of 15% and as for the calendar year 2015, it registered a growth of 23% YoY basis. This growth also meant that India’s smartphone shipments crossed 100 million units¬†mark.

Among all the mobile phones shipped in India, 40% were smartphones with more than one in two being 4G LTE compatible. Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative also saw positive results as about half of all the shipped smartphones were assembled in India.

As for the smartphone vendor distribution, Samsung is still the biggest brand in India with a 28.6% share followed by Micromax and Lenovo at 14.3% and 11.4% respectively. The remaining two spots in the top five were taken by Intex and Lava with a share of 9.6% and 6.8% respectively.

The report further mentioned that Chinese brands like Meizu, OnePlus, and Coolpad also saw significant growth. The firm has predicted this year to be a competitive one as other brands like Huawei (along with Honor) and Vivo will be expanding their portfolio in India.
